It was pretty entertaining, though the constant ragging on the worthlessness of the Chevy was a bit droll (a 1.0l Fiat Panda 4x4 beating a 454 Silverado in a roll race handily stretches suspension of disbelief to me).
The car choices per presenter were spot on, and I absolutely believe each of the three picked their respective vehicles.

A 454 Chevy from that gen had maybe 290hp when new, going through a very slow transmission. Add that to the incredibly heavy tires, and it probably is pretty slow.

Honestly I found it borderline unwatchable. It was heavily scripted, each presenter basically plays a super dumbed down characature of themselves, the constant gay panic jokes about the Jeep were lame and not funny. All of this can get chalked up to the writing getting lazier, which just shows how burned out everyone is getting. I’ll give the 2nd part a shot, but after this first part, they’re on the thinnest of ice. I’m about to call it quits on watching any new stuff from them.

Hard to believe they actually let them cross those jank-ass bridges, too.

I found it much worse than last week’s episode.

Yeah, the “
wrangler is a gay car” jokes were just weird and out of touch in 2019.
The second part is
more entertaining just because of the weather issues and sketchy bridges.

Oh I absolutely agree that it’s not gonna be a fast truck by any means, but it should still handily outrun a 48 horsepower fiat.

More like 190hp
sm70- why not Duesenberg?

Eh, the truck may have 4x the power but it weighs 4x as much, combine that with the world’s laziest automatic and a HUGE set of mud tires and there you go.

Yeah, the wrangler=gay stuff was weird, both because I don’t think that’s really a stereotype (maybe different in the UK?), and because they kept hammering on it relentlessly. Even if we were talking about a Miata, that joke would get old after one or two mentions. Going back to it again and again just seems out of place.

That’s a ‘96+ Vortec 454. 290hp/410 lb-ft.

It used to be a joke stereotype back in the late 90s about Jeep Wranglers, MX5s, etc... about them being gay cars , hairdressers cars or gay hairdressers cars. I can’t believe they still use it, but then again how often do people say that large truck owners are over compensating for something, whilst implying what it is they are compensating for.
I’m all for entertainment and jokes but old jokes died out for a reason.
It should be about cars and having fun without targeting anyone for derision.

Honestly, I’d have been more terrified of the lift. Didn’t look especially secure, and it’s easy to imagine their being pretty strong wind gusts up in the mountains (to say nothing of that lighting).

I absolutely believe the Panda could outrun the truck. If you put giant Super Swampers on it, and leave it geared so it can drive at highway speeds (which it obviously was), it’s going to be slow as dog shit.
I enjoyed the show, but it won't be one of my go-to episodes like the Bolivia, Vietnam, or Buhrma specials were.

The bigger tires are a wild card, but they’re not cartoonishly large by brotruck standards. Stock for stock, the Panda could do a 1/4 mile in 21.2 seconds vs 16.4 for the Chevy. 0-60 times are 16.8 seconds for the Panda and 8.4 for the Chevy. Literally half the time. I don’t buy that the bigger tires killed the Chevy’s performance
from a roll
so thoroughly.

The donkey thing was weird and felt totally out of phase with the rest of the show.
The Jeep gay thing was something I’ve never heard about, especially since they said it was an American stereotype, I was especially confused. Sounds like something they decided to make into an issue that didn’t even exist in the real world. Not that it should these days anyways.
Clarkson is already getting criticized about this, however it’s Hammond who started it. Similar to the Mexican situation, Hammond is the big offender but it’s Clarkson who takes the biggest criticism.
The Chevy thing wasn’t that big a deal, anyone with a brain can assume those giant tires will hurt performance, factor in the fact it was in salt water for a long time can assume it would have some issues down the road.
Top Gear UK is vastly better than The Grand Tour.

Who knows how well that truck was taken care of, so many other variables. Factor in this show is scripted and that throws anything you watch out the door.
